One more thing...

I forgot to say that the cake is a banana cake I made from scratch and the frosting (under the fondant) is a homemade cream cheese frosting!

Not great, but pretty good...

Here is my first attempt at a poker table cake. I didn't cut the hexagon shape straight, so that is a little off. Also, the black dye really dries out the fondant and makes it a little harder to work worth, so the sides aren't entirely smooth. I know what I need to do for next time, though, to get it to look nicer. I am making this cake for my cousin Tony's birthday next month and want it to look just right! Also, here are some pictures of the characters and animals I have been trying... It will only get better.

Will be making more attempts sooooon!

Figures...

Because I will be making cakes for a couple of different kid events, I wanted to try and make the figures that I will most likely be using on the cakes. I tried Winnie the Pooh and Tinker Bell this time. They're not exact, but I think you can tell who they are. I will get better as time goes on and I have more practice. This was a first attempt, mind you.

I think they turned out cute. Pooh even has a party hat! LoL.

As I said in the last post, I am doing a cake for a baby shower next month and wanted to do some trial runs before the big show. I had found some great ideas on this awesome website http://www.cakecentral.com/ I really wanted to try the baby clothesline so I gave it a shot. It turned out alright, but I believe that it will look much better on a) a bigger cake and b) if I don't make the "clothesline" droop so low.
The teddy bears are of my own design and turned out really cute. The multi-colored blanket the top bear is sitting on was made after I initially cut out circles to put on the top layer and changed my mind so I rolled all of them together and it made a cool tie dye effect. I wanted to use it so I made it into a blanket and put the one bear on it. As for the baby banner, I probably should have just colored some buttercream and written it on there with it, but I wanted to see how this would turn out and it was late. LoL.

My first of many...

So, I have always been facinated by the cakes designed on all the wedding shows and, of course, on Ace of Cakes on The Food Network. I always wanted to try working with fondant and now I have! My first attempt went pretty well. Of course, my lines could have been straighter and the balls around the base could have been rounder, but hey, I'm going to cut myself some slack. I made both the fondant and buttercream from scratch, but the cake mixes are from a box (I will be testing out homemade cake recipes next!). I dyed the fondant the different colors, rolled it out, and cut out the strips and shapes.

I'll be making a cake for a baby shower and I've got a lot of great ideas. I'm going to be practicing so I'll be sure to post new pictures as soon as I can! I'm also doing a few birthday cakes and I have ideas for those, as well. I'm hoping this turns into something, assuming I can make them all look pretty.

Here goes nothing!
